Private Michael Gaffney

 

The background of this man is not known at present.

Michael Gaffney enlisted in the cavalry at Dublin on 9 September 1918. Posted to the North Irish Horse, he was issued Corps of Hussars No.72144. He was described as being 5' 2" tall, with a fresh complexion, brown hair and grey eyes, with tattooes of a cross, flags and a ship on his chest, and a scar on his left knee. He stated that he was 19 years old, was born in St John's, Dublin, and worked as a stable boy.

Gaffney was reported to have deserted from the regiment's reserve base at Antrim on 25 October 1918. It is not known if he was subsequentially apprehended.
